customdesign
A custom tattoo is the difference between wearing an image and wearing a story. You bring the idea, reference, or feeling. I build a piece that sits right on your body and looks like it was always meant to be there.
If you have been saving screenshots for months and none of them feel exactly right, that is where my custom tattoo design work comes in. I take the details you care about and turn them into a design that fits your anatomy, style and skin. The goal is a tattoo that feels personal and specific to you.
I work in fine line, realism, traditional and dark/blackwork, in black and grey only. No colour. Just clean, detailed custom work built around you.

What A Custom Tattoo Means Here
A custom tattoo is a lot more than changing a font. It is a design drawn for one person, on one part of the body, with a clear idea behind it.
You might come in with:
- A loose idea or theme
- A specific subject (animal, object, figure, portrait)
- An existing style you like (fine line, traditional, realism, blackwork)
My job is to turn that into a clear, balanced design. I think about line weight, detail level, skin texture, how it will age, and how it works with the shape of the area we are using. You leave with something that feels like your idea, but sharper and more considered.
Styles I Custom Design Most
Every custom tattoo here starts with black and grey. Within that, I blend styles more than I separate them.
Fine line custom tattoos
If you like subtle, minimal work with clean detail, fine line is likely right for you. I use thin lines and open space so the design reads clearly without looking heavy on the skin.
Fine line works well for:
- Script and lettering
- Florals and botanicals
- Small symbolism pieces
- Delicate portraits and figures
Placement matters a lot with fine line. I will guide you on where it will hold best over time.
Realism and portrait-style custom tattoos
Realism tattoos work when the reference is strong and the scale is big enough. I focus on fine line and black and grey realism.
Clients often bring:
- Portraits of people or pets
- Statues, sculptures or film stills
- Skulls, animals or objects
- Mixed realism with graphic or traditional elements
I simplify what does not translate well to skin, then keep the key features that make the subject recognisable.
Traditional and modern-traditional custom tattoos
Traditional builds on bold shapes, clear shading and strong silhouettes. I use black and grey for this style.
Good subjects for traditional style:
- Skulls, daggers, snakes
- Hearts, roses and classic motifs
- Script with banners or framing
- Strong, graphic icons
We can keep it classic, or soften it with finer lines or realism details if you prefer a more modern take.
Dark / blackwork custom tattoos
If you want something moodier and more solid, blackwork might be the right lane. I use heavy black, negative space and contrast to create depth.
Blackwork suits:
- Larger pieces and sleeves
- Mythical or surreal imagery
- Abstract shapes and patterns
- Reworking old linework with darker sections around it
This style demands careful planning. I map how the black will sit so it does not overtake the rest of your skin.
How I Approach Custom Tattoo Design
You are not ordering off a menu. You are coming in with something that matters to you and trusting me to interpret it.
1. Short consult to set the direction
Before any booking, I offer a free 10–15 minute consultation, video or in person. You show me your references, tell me the story or meaning, and we talk about style, size, and placement.
I will tell you honestly if the idea works better as:
- Fine line
- Realism
- Traditional
- Blackwork
- Or a blend
I also tell you if a reference will not translate well, and why. I would rather say no than put something on you that will blur or age badly.
2. Booking and deposit
Once we land on a direction, we book a date. All bookings are by appointment only. No walk-ins.
To secure the spot:
- $100 deposit for small pieces
- $200 deposit for medium pieces
- $400 deposit for full-day sessions
Your deposit goes toward the final price and is refundable if you need to move or cancel with enough notice. I do not keep cards on file or charge anything beyond the deposit for late changes.
3. Design work before you arrive
This is where I disappear with your ideas for a while. I sketch digitally or on paper, using your references as inspiration for the composition and mood.
I think about:
- How the piece flows with muscle lines
- Where to simplify detail so it reads clean on skin
- Line weight and shading so it heals well
- How it might connect to future work if you want a sleeve later
You will see the design on the day, with time to make small notes or tweaks. If you want big changes that turn it into a different design, we will talk about shifting the booking.
4. On the day: placement and stencil
When you arrive, we go through the design together. You can expect a calm, unhurried setup. It is just you and me in the room.
I place the stencil on your skin, then we check it from different angles, sitting and standing. You will feel the stencil solution cool on your skin and the light pressure as I position it. If something feels off, we adjust until it sits right.
5. Tattooing
Once you are happy with placement, I set up my station with single-use needles and fully wrapped equipment. You will feel a scratch or buzz as the machine starts, then a steady, controlled line as I work.
I move section by section, wiping and checking lines and shading as I go. We can talk, listen to music, or sit quiet. Breaks are fine at any point. The focus stays on clean work and consistent detail.
When it is done, we go over it together and I make any final small passes where needed.
6. Aftercare and touch-up
At the end, I wrap the tattoo and walk you through aftercare step by step. You leave knowing how to wash it, what to put on it, and what to avoid.
If any small areas heal lighter than expected, I offer one free touch-up within one month on my own work. That touch-up is booked like a normal appointment, with time set aside for you.
Why Choose Me For Your Custom Tattoo
Toronto has a lot of tattoo artists. The difference is in careful, consistent work in the style you actually want.
I focus on:
- Fine line realism
- Traditional and modern-traditional
- Dark/blackwork
- Black and grey only
I turn down colour pieces and work I am not the right fit for. That keeps my energy and attention on the kind of custom tattoo design I am best at.
I have six years’ experience, learned on the floor at SJ Tattoo Studio from artists I still respect. I work by appointment at 1800 Davenport Rd, Unit 6 in Toronto, one client at a time. No rush, no crowd around the chair.
If you want a custom tattoo that feels considered and personal, and you value an honest opinion on what will work, I am a good fit.
What To Expect At Your Appointment
- Time: I book enough time so you do not feel rushed. How long we need depends on size, detail and style.
- Pain: Different spots feel different. I will walk you through what to expect for your placement and pace the session around that.
- Environment: Quiet, clean, focused. It is you and me, with your reference images on hand and the design in front of us.
- Payment: Minimum charge is $200. Deposits are applied to your final total. I do not charge HST.
- Age & ID: You must be 18+ with government photo ID. No exceptions.
If you are new to tattoos, I am happy to answer every question before we start. There is no pressure to go ahead if something does not feel right on the day.
Ready To Start Your Custom Design?
If you are in Toronto and ready to turn your idea into a custom tattoo that feels like you, the first step is a short consult. Bring your references, your thoughts, and a rough idea of where you want it.
FAQs: Custom Tattoo Design In Toronto
How does your custom tattoo design process work?
I start with a free 10–15 minute consultation, then build a design around your idea, style and placement. You see the design on the day of your appointment and we fine-tune small details together before I start tattooing. Every step is built around one person and one piece.
Can I bring reference images for my custom tattoo?
Yes, you should. References help me see what you like in terms of style, subject and detail. I will not copy another artist’s work line for line, but I will use your images to guide composition, mood and elements for your custom tattoo design.
Do you offer colour custom tattoos?
No, I work in black and grey only. My focus is fine line, realism, traditional and dark/blackwork. If your idea relies heavily on bright colour, I will tell you that upfront and suggest you find a colour specialist in Toronto instead of pushing it into a style that does not suit it.
How much does a custom tattoo cost?
Every custom tattoo is priced on size, detail and placement, with a minimum charge of $200. Your deposit ($100 small, $200 medium, $400 full day) goes toward that total. I do not charge HST. During your consultation I can give you a rough range based on your specific idea.
Can I see my custom design before the appointment day?
I usually show the final design on the day of the booking. That keeps the design time focused and avoids endless revisions by message. There is always room for small adjustments when you see it on your body. If something feels off, we fix it before I start.
What if I change my mind about the idea after booking?
If you change the idea completely, we may need to move the appointment or treat it as a new booking so I can design properly. If it is a small shift within the same concept, we can often adjust on the day. The best way is to message me as soon as you know, so we can decide together.
What is your rescheduling and cancellation policy?
You can reschedule or cancel with at least 72 hours’ notice and keep your deposit applied to a new date. If you cancel late or do not show up, I keep the deposit and you will need a new one to rebook. There is no extra charge beyond the deposit for late changes or no-shows.
Do you rework old tattoos as custom pieces?
I can sometimes work near existing tattoos or build new custom work that complements what you already have, if there is enough clear skin. During the consultation I will look at the area and tell you honestly what is possible and what is not.
How do I book a custom tattoo with you in Toronto?
You can book through this website or contact me directly using the details here. We start with a short consultation to talk through your idea, placement and style. Once we are both clear on the direction, we pick a date and secure it with a deposit.
Do you offer free touch-ups on custom tattoos?
Yes, I offer one free touch-up within one month on custom tattoos I have done, if any small areas heal lighter or need a bit more line or shading. Touch-ups are by appointment so you still get proper time and attention.
When you are ready, I am here.
