modern
Clean lines. Open space. A design that feels like you.
If you are drawn to abstract tattoos or minimalist tattoos, you probably see tattoos as more than pictures. You want something simple and modern that still carries weight. That is the space I work in.
I am Mitch, a Toronto tattoo artist focused on fine line, realism, black and grey and contemporary work. I book one client at a time so we can build something considered.

Modern work for people who do not want a “typical” tattoo
Maybe you do not see yourself in classic skulls, roses or heavy colour. You save screenshots of subtle wrist pieces, abstract shapes, line drawings that sit in a lot of negative space.
You want a modern tattoo that feels graphic and intentional on your body. Not crowded. Not cute for a year then dated.
That is where contemporary and abstract tattoos fit. Clean forms, often black and grey, shaped around the part of your body they live on.
What “modern” and “contemporary” mean in my chair
Modern and contemporary tattoos cover a lot of ground. For me, it usually looks like this:
- Fine line, black and grey work
- Minimalist designs with room to breathe
- Abstract or semi-abstract compositions built from your idea
I do not do colour pieces. Keeping to black and grey lets me push detail, texture and composition without your tattoo blurring into a block over time.
You bring the reference or the feeling. I turn it into a design that works as a tattoo, on your skin, long term.
Styles I offer in this category
Abstract tattoos
If you searched “abstract tattoo toronto”, you are probably looking for something that does not read as a literal object.
That might be:
- Shapes that follow the curve of a forearm
- Line work that echoes movement in a photo or memory
- Graphic elements that sit over an existing piece without covering it
You can bring artwork, album covers, architecture, even a pattern from clothing you like. I will not copy it line for line. I pull the parts that matter and build an abstract tattoo that fits your body and heals clean.
Minimalist tattoos
Minimalist tattoos look simple. They are not simple to do well.
When you only have a few lines or a small symbol, every millimetre matters. Any wobble shows. Spacing has to be right so the piece does not blur into itself over time.
I work in fine line and realism, so small, exact detail is my daily work. That carries straight into minimalist tattoos, whether it is a single-word script, a tiny icon, or a small abstract mark on the wrist or ankle.
If you searched “minimalist tattoo toronto” and feel lost in shops that only show big bold colour, this is the lane I sit in.
Contemporary compositions
Some pieces sit between realism and abstract.
A face with geometric shapes through it. A realistic hand with graphic elements around it. A traditional subject (snake, dagger, flower) stripped back and rebuilt as something more modern.
This is contemporary work. It is where I get to mix my realism training with modern, stripped-down design.
If you bring me references from different styles, I will explain what can translate and what cannot, then sketch something that pulls it together without feeling like three tattoos in one.
How I build a modern or abstract piece with you
1. Quick consult
Every project starts with a free 10–15 minute consultation. This can be video or in person at 1800 Davenport Rd, Unit 6 in Toronto.
You show me your ideas, references and where you are thinking of placing the tattoo. I ask questions about size, how visible you want it, and your past tattoo experience. I also tell you honestly if your idea fits my style.
You leave knowing if we are a fit and what to expect.
2. Booking and deposit
If you want to move ahead, we pick a date and you pay a deposit:
- $100 for small pieces
- $200 for medium pieces
- $400 for a full day
The deposit comes off the final price and is refundable if you reschedule with at least 72 hours’ notice. I do not keep a card on file or charge you beyond the deposit for late cancel or no-show.
My minimum charge is $200. There is no HST.
3. Design time
I take your references and notes and start drawing.
For modern and minimalist tattoos, I focus on:
- Line weight that heals clean
- Negative space that suits the body part
- A composition that still reads from a distance
Every project gets one considered design based on what we discussed. We can make small tweaks on the day. If you want a complete change of direction, that is a new booking.
4. Tattoo day
You arrive at the studio space at your booked time. It is by appointment only, so it is just you and me.
We go over the design together, check placement in the mirror and adjust until it feels right. Once you are happy, I set up new, single-use needles and clean the area.
During the tattoo you can chat or sit quiet. Most minimalist and abstract pieces are steady, controlled line work, so you will mainly feel a consistent scratch or pressure in the area I am working on.
I do not rush. A clean line is more important than finishing ten minutes sooner.
5. Aftercare and touch-up
When we are done, I wrap the tattoo and walk you through aftercare in clear steps. You also get the instructions written down.
If anything heals light or needs small fixes, I offer a free touch-up on my own work within one month of your appointment.
You always know how to reach me by email or Instagram if you have questions while it heals.
Is a modern or minimalist tattoo right for you?
This style is usually a good fit if:
- You like clean, graphic design and a lot of negative space
- You want the tattoo to sit quietly
- You care about how the lines will look and read years from now
If you want bright colour, heavy shading or large traditional-style pieces, I am not the right artist for that. I focus on black and grey, fine line and contemporary work.
If you are unsure, the consultation is where we sort that out.

FAQ: Modern & Minimalist Tattoos
Are minimalist tattoos a good first tattoo?
Yes, minimalist tattoos often work well for a first tattoo. They are usually smaller and sit well in places like the wrist, ankle or arm. During your consultation I help you pick a size and placement that fits both your idea and your comfort level.
How long does a small minimalist tattoo take?
Most small minimalist tattoos take less time than larger pieces, but the exact timing depends on the detail and placement. I book enough time so we are never rushing the line work. In your consult I can give you a rough idea based on your design.
Do abstract tattoos age well?
Abstract tattoos can age very well if the design is built for skin. I keep line weight, spacing and overall size in mind so the tattoo still reads clearly as it softens over time. During your consult I will point out any parts of your idea that might not hold up.
Can I bring my own abstract artwork?
Yes, you can bring your own artwork or an artist you like. I will not copy it exactly, but I can use it as a starting point for a custom abstract tattoo. We talk through what matters most to you in the piece before I draw.
What if I am not sure on exact placement?
That is normal. On tattoo day I print a few stencil sizes and we test different placements on your body. We look in the mirror from different angles until the spot and scale feel right. We do not start until you are fully happy with it.
Do you do colour minimalist tattoos?
No, I do not do colour work. I focus on black and grey, fine line and realism. If your idea depends on colour, I will tell you that in the consultation so you do not waste your time.
How far ahead do I need to book in Toronto?
I usually book out around two weeks, but it can shift. The booking form will always show the current availability. If you have a specific date in mind, it helps to reach out sooner.
What is a minimalist tattoo professional?
A minimalist tattoo professional is an artist who works a lot in simple, stripped-back designs and understands how they heal. My daily work at Mitch Bold Tattoos is fine line, realism and modern, minimalist pieces, so that experience shapes every design I draw for you.
