traditional

Traditional and neo traditional tattoos are what most people picture when they think “real tattoo.” Strong lines. Solid black. Clear shapes that read from across the room.

If you are looking for a traditional tattoo artist in Toronto who keeps that classic feel but cares about detail and flow, you are in the right place. I work in black and grey only, so every piece is about contrast, structure and how it sits on your body over time.

Traditional style, your story

Maybe you have always liked old school tattoo flash. Anchors, daggers, panthers, skulls. Or you are drawn to neo traditional tattoo designs with more depth and realism, and want them to stay sharp for years.

Traditional work suits people who want:

  • Tattoos that stay readable as they age
  • Bold pieces that stand alone or build into sleeves
  • Classic imagery with personal twists

I focus on fine line and realism, but I also love building traditional and neo traditional pieces that bring that same level of care to a more graphic style.

You bring the idea. I help turn it into something clean, balanced and built to last.

02

What makes a traditional tattoo “traditional”?

Traditional tattoos use a simple recipe: bold lines, limited details and strong shapes. That is what gives you that classic “old school tattoo” look you see on flash sheets and vintage photos.

The basics:

  • Clear black outlines
  • Simple shading
  • High contrast so it reads from distance

Neo traditional tattoo work takes that base and adds more dimension and detail. You still get that strong silhouette, but with more realism in the face, fabric or fur, and more room for story in the design.

I like traditional and neo traditional styles because they work with how skin heals. They are not fighting your body. They are built for it.

03

Fine line vs traditional tattoo: how to choose

Fine line tattoos are great for delicate details, script and subtle pieces. They sit lighter on the skin and can look almost like pencil drawings.

Traditional tattoos do something different:

  • They fill space with bolder shapes
  • They hold up better at a distance
  • They stay readable longer as your skin changes

If you are not sure whether fine line vs traditional tattoo makes more sense for your idea, that is what the consultation is for. I look at the design, ask where you want it and how big, then tell you honestly what will work best on your skin and in that spot.

Sometimes that means a fine line piece. Sometimes it means switching to a more traditional build so the tattoo still looks clean in ten years. I will always explain why.

Neo traditional tattoo in Toronto, done in black and grey

Most neo traditional tattoos you see online are full colour. I work strictly black and grey.

That changes how the style is built:

  • I lean on line weight, texture and shading to make the piece pop
  • I use my realism background to push depth into eyes, faces, fabric and fur
  • I keep the framing shapes bold so the piece still reads as neo traditional, even without colour

If you are looking for a neo traditional tattoo in Toronto but prefer a darker, more stripped-back look, this is where my style fits. You still get that mix of classic tattooing and detailed drawing, just through contrast instead of colour.

05

Old school tattoo elements I like to work with

Old school tattoo designs are simple, but that is what makes them strong. I often work with:

  • Daggers, snakes and panthers
  • Skulls and anatomical hearts
  • Roses, webs, flames and eyes
  • Script paired with classic imagery

You can bring me reference photos or flash you like. I will not copy another artist’s work line for line. I use your references to understand what you are drawn to, then I build something fresh around that.

The goal is always the same: a piece that looks like traditional or old school tattoo work at first glance, but is built around your body and your story.

How I approach traditional and neo traditional pieces

1. Free consultation

Every tattoo starts with a quick chat, in person or on video. You tell me what you are thinking, show me any references and talk about placement.

I look at:

  • Your skin texture in that area
  • How the lines will move when you walk or bend
  • Any existing tattoos we need to work around

I will tell you straight if traditional, neo traditional or fine line makes more sense, or if the idea needs more space than you first imagined. No pressure to book on the spot.

2. Booking and deposit

If you want to go ahead, we pick a date and lock it in with a deposit:

  • $100 for small pieces
  • $200 for medium
  • $400 for a full day

Your deposit comes off the final price and is refundable with 72 hours’ notice. There is a $200 minimum for any tattoo. I do not charge HST.

3. Design time

I draw between appointments. For traditional and neo traditional tattoos, I focus on:

  • Clean, confident lines
  • Flow around muscles and bones
  • Contrast that works in black and grey

You will see the design on the day. If we need small tweaks to size or placement, we do that together before I set up. If you want a complete redesign in a new direction, we book a new date so the drawing gets the time it needs.

4. In the chair

The setup is simple and clean. One client at a time. No crowd, no walk-ins coming and going.

I shave and prep the area, apply the stencil, and we check it in a few positions: standing, sitting, turning. When you are happy, I start lining.

You feel a steady scratch or burn in the area being worked on. I work in sections so you can get used to the feeling and take breaks when you need them. The focus stays on keeping lines smooth and consistent rather than rushing to finish.

Shading comes after the lines are locked in. For neo traditional pieces, I build up depth slowly so the gradients stay clean and the blacks sit where they should.

5. Aftercare and touch-up

Before you leave, I cover the tattoo and walk you through aftercare in clear steps. You get written instructions so you are not relying on memory.

If it is your first tattoo, I make sure you know what normal healing looks like and what would be a reason to see a doctor. I am not a medic, so I do not diagnose or treat anything, but I can tell you when something does not look right and you should get it checked.

Touch-ups on my own work are free within one month. That gives any small light spots a chance to show, and we can tighten them up while the tattoo is still fresh.

Why book traditional work with me

I have been tattooing for six years, learning at SJ Tattoo Studio from artists who did clean, solid work day after day. I still bring that same focus to every piece.

What I care about most:

  • Composition that fits the body
  • Line work that stays steady all the way through
  • Being honest about what will and will not hold up

I say no to colour because I would rather do a smaller set of things very well. If you want a traditional or neo traditional tattoo artist in Toronto who works in black and grey, takes the time to explain the plan, and keeps the session calm and focused, that is what I do.

Traditional and neo traditional ideas that work well

Some concepts that lend themselves to this style:

  • Classic daggers through hearts or skulls
  • Snakes wrapped around flowers or blades
  • Big cats, wolves and birds with strong silhouettes
  • Woman’s head, masks and occult imagery
  • Ships, anchors and nautical themes

These can all be pushed more old school or more neo traditional depending on the line weight, detail and shading. During your consultation we decide how far to lean either way so the final tattoo matches how you want it to feel.

FAQs: Traditional and neo traditional tattoos in Toronto

What is the difference between traditional and neo traditional tattoos?

Traditional tattoos use bold outlines, simple shading and classic imagery. Neo traditional builds on that with more detail and depth while keeping a strong shape. I use both styles in black and grey only, and I explain which one suits your idea best in your consultation.

Do you offer colour traditional or neo traditional tattoos?

I do not offer colour work. All my traditional, neo traditional and old school tattoo pieces are black and grey. If you want that style but prefer a darker, more minimalist look, that is where I focus. If you need full-colour work, I am not the right artist.

How big should a traditional tattoo be to age well?

Traditional tattoos need enough size for the lines and shapes to breathe. Very tiny traditional pieces tend to blur over time. During your consult I will tell you the smallest size that still keeps the design readable on your skin so it holds up.

Can you mix fine line and traditional in one piece?

Yes, you can mix elements. For example, a bold traditional frame around finer details inside. I often use my fine line and realism background to add texture within a traditional outline. The key is balancing it so the tattoo still reads cleanly from a distance.

Where are you located in Toronto?

I work by appointment at 1800 Davenport Rd, Unit 6, Toronto, ON M6N 4X3. It is in the west end, easy to reach from Queen West, King West and Liberty Village. All bookings go through this site or my email.

How do I book a neo traditional tattoo with you?

Start with a free 10–15 minute consultation. You can book it online or message me at mitchbold.ink@gmail.com. We go over your idea, placement and size, and if it is a fit we pick a date and take a deposit to secure your spot.

What is your deposit and cancellation policy?

Deposits are $100 for small, $200 for medium and $400 for a full day, and they come off the final price. If you cancel or move your appointment with less than 72 hours’ notice, I keep the deposit and a new one is needed to rebook. There is no card on file and no extra charge.

Do traditional tattoos hurt more than other styles?

The feeling comes more from placement and how long we work on one area than from the style itself. Traditional tattoos can feel easier in some spots because the lines are more direct. I keep the pace steady, check in often and am happy to take breaks when you need them.

Can you work around existing tattoos?

Yes, I can design traditional or neo traditional pieces that sit beside or between existing tattoos. I can build new work that flows with what you already have. In person I can see how your current tattoos sit and suggest the best way to add on.

When you are ready to plan your traditional or neo traditional tattoo, I am here to help you get it right from the start.
